Thanksgiving in Amsterdam

Thanksgiving was our first big holiday away from the U.S. and we were so grateful to have Dorothy here to spend it with us.  It’s funny having Thanksgiving in a country that doesn’t celebrate it.  It was just like any other day — James Wilson had school, James had work, and it was business as usual here in Amsterdam.

Dorothy and I got manicures on Thanksgiving Day. She made a friend in the salon.

Luckily there are enough Expats living here that there are plenty of options for having a traditional dinner.  There are butchers who will order turkeys and even prepare them, along with all the sides, which is great because most people (myself included) have ovens the size of a shoe box so cooking a turkey in the Snopelwarmen-Magnetron would be quite a challenge.

There are also lots of restaurants that put on full Thanksgiving dinners, and we chose that option.  We went to Thanksgiving dinner at the Wyer’s restaurant with a group of people from the American Women’s Club.  It was great!  The food was delicious, and it was fun and festive to spend it with other Americans.  The best part was someone else did the cooking and we didn’t have to do any cleaning up!  And of course, having Dorothy here made it all the more special.

Happy Thanksgiving, Everybody! (James took the picture so he’s not in this one)
