Potato Bones

One of the things I love here is how easy it is to make dinner.  It was the bane of my existence back home because I don’t particularly like to cook, and it always felt like such an ordeal, but it’s a non-issue here. There are markets absolutely everywhere, so I basically decide it’s time to make dinner, I walk to the store (or send James Wilson, which he loves), choose whatever strikes my fancy, and dinner is ready in 15-20 minutes. Everything is fresh, we buy only what we need, and we aren’t wasting food.

James had a work dinner so I made chicken thighs and mushrooms for the kid and me and we ate it while we watched Dr. Who. Please note that it is NOT a bowl of cereal.
Groceries are much less expensive here, and very fresh. This talapia was pre-seasoned and took about 7 minutes to cook.

The only tricky part is when I am cooking something that requires me to read directions.  Google Translate told me the cream of wheat instructions were to “helm the pre-warm milk to bilf until goodbye,” which I am pretty sure meant heat the milk and stir in the cream of wheat then simmer until it thickens.

Tonight Google Translate told me we are having Potato Bones.

When we don’t feel like cooking, we have endless options for eating out or ordering in. A few nights ago we went to the movies and only had a few minutes to eat before going in but we were in Rembranstplein, so we could have pretty much anything. James Wilson got noodles and James and I got falafel.  As we were eating James told me I was “in my glory”, and if I had my way I’d eat every meal with my hands while standing on the street.

He’s not wrong.

  • I love reading about your adventures, Jen! Also, you look beautiful! You must be so happy!! 🙂

  • Sounds like cooking is very easy. I do my own cooking but I do not do very fancy meals. Pretty easy and simple meal in the evening….daytime is coffee and toast for breakfast, and maybe a sandwich , if I am hungry, at lunch. Your food looks delicious.
Jenna…..I am happy ,as your Holy Monsignor Uncle, that you have been staying away from the Red Light District. I would have to come over there for confession if you had fallen back into your old New Orleans Activities! Ha Ha Ha!!
I am so happy for all of you to be having this marvelous experience of living there in Amsterdam. God Bless all of you. Keep sharing here with your messages…I love coming here to your site to read your Blogs.

    • Dear Holy Monsignor Uncle Steve,
I love reading your comments and am so glad you are following along. Well, I can NOT compound my sins by lying to you — I have indeed been frequenting the Red Light District. I can assure you my activities have remained entirely wholesome, but you had best keep me on your list of wayward souls in need of EXTRA prayers just in case because you just NEVER KNOW what could happen.

      xoxo
