Obama Slept Here Last Friday!
October 1, 2018
I joined the American Women’s Club of Amsterdam shortly after we got here, and it has been a great way to meet people and get involved in lots of things around the city. I’ve been to several events already (pub nights, coffee hours, excursions, etc) which have all been welcoming and fun. The big monthly meeting is held at the Amstel Hotel, which is one of Amsterdam’s oldest and fanciest and it’s where celebrities and visiting dignitaries typically stay. Today, the club members got to take a private tour of the hotel, and it turns out Obama stayed here last Friday! We were allowed to go into the “Royal Suite” where he stayed.
I will not lie, I was enjoying the tour like everyone else, but when the hotel manager casually mentioned that Obama was here last Friday (and stayed in the suite we were standing in) I totally flipped out and made a fool of myself rudely insisting everyone get out of my way while I took a gazillion pictures.
Here’s a fun little detail — apparently there was a tiny little stain on the white carpet so the hotel had the carpet changed so it would be perfect for Obama, but new carpet is stinky so apparently Obama had to endure some fumes. I’m sure he took it in stride because he is THE BEST.
The hotel does high tea every afternoon in the fancy parlor room, and it’s supposed to be fabulous. We were encouraged to make reservations early as it fills up fast and is always booked. It’s now on my list of things to do.
There was one other lady who openly shared my enthusiasm about Obama’s visit, and went a little crazy taking pictures, but the rest of the women either weren’t as impressed, or played it cool. I’m not going to be friends with any of them.
Still smiling after reading this. I would’ve made everyone move out of my way too. And I agree, no need to be friends with those Obama non-enthusiasts.
