Endless Summer

Summer in Amsterdam is glorious. Aside from the two heatwaves, the weather is amazing — cool, breezy, low humidity and mostly sunny. The days stretch on impossibly long. On sunny days, the sun doesn’t set until after 10pm.

We had a lot of hustle and activity at the beginning of our summer with family and friends visiting, but the last couple of weeks have been quiet and I’ve gotten into a groove with the slower pace with JW off at summer camp and James working. I’ve been staying up later, having slow mornings with coffee and early morning canal walks with Brian, biking to the gym to swim or use the elliptical machine, reading in the garden, taking afternoon naps, eating late dinners, and taking the Shrimp Whisker out for evening canal cruises with James.

James and I went out to dinner at a farm to table restaurant in Oost

After dinner we strolled through the gardens. You can see rare nesting storks on the tower in the background.
I’m not typically a huge fan of going out to eat in restaurants — to be honest, I mostly find it tedious, but it was really lovely to have made a reservation (you need one way in advance at this restaurant) and to have an evening out with my husband. It felt special.

Gay Pride is celebrated the last week of July in Amsterdam. James and I walked to the canal ring to see the Pride parade on the Prinsegracht canal. It was amazing!

We arrived at the parade early enough to get a good spot to see all the boat floats.

JW and I gave James a Driving Experience at the Formula One racetrack in Zaandevort for his birthday. I took the Sprinter out to the beach to watch James drive and then spent the day in the North Sea.

James’s driving day was during the record-setting heat wave. It was the hottest day ever recorded in The Netherlands. I was sure they would cancel the experience and reschedule it but no luck. I nearly died walking to and from the track but James hung in there.

We took some weekend afternoon and week-night evening boat excursions on the Shrimp Whisker.

James found a new route through a bunch of scenic canals we hadn’t driven down yet that took us through De Wallen. We anchored in Central and relaxed on Shrimpy in the middle of all the chaos of the Red Light District. We had such a fun evening. We kept laughing in disbelief that it was a week-night evening, but every day feels like vacation here.

James Wilson got home from camp yesterday and my heart is so full. I got a solid 5-6 hours of his attention before I lost him to his electronics, but we have our two week vacation to Croatia with the Farmers starting this Saturday! It truly is an endless summer, and it’s magical.
