Flea Market and BBQ

Saturday we went to the Ij Hallen flea market in Nord. It’s the biggest flea market in Amsterdam (maybe in all of the Netherlands?). It’s once a month and you have to pay 5 euros to enter, which I think is a pretty good idea. It’s massive and very well organized with clean bathrooms and food trucks and all kinds of things to buy.

Nord is very hipster/industrial, much like Williamsburg Brooklyn was back in the day.
The Ij Hallen flea market is massive. It’s outside in a huge industrial space right on the harbor.
It’s hard to capture just how sprawling this place is
James bought this old-school metal box and it will be perfect for The Shrimp Whisker
Looks like junk…
But there’s treasure to be found!

Some high quality items
These guys were making fresh poffertjes, the tiny little dutch pancakes covered in butter and powdered sugar. So good.
Perhaps next time I’ll get a tattoo and check out the Barbie Peep Show

I was on the lookout for Persian rugs, a chandelier for the bedroom and an old-fashioned changing screen for the bedroom so we don’t have to wrestle the floor to ceiling curtains open and closed every time we want to change. We lucked out on the rugs.

When I went to Morocco I loved the look of colorful layered rugs so I’ve been wanting to find some that aren’t too expensive for the kitchen because the marble is pretty old and stained and cold and I thought layering the rugs would warm things up. I’m not sure I have the look perfected, but it’s getting there.

After the Flea Market it was time for the annual neighborhood BBQ, which was happening in the playground right across the street from our apartment. It was a huge turnout. Pretty much everyone from our street and even some people from neighboring streets came. There were several grills and a rented blowup bouncy house and everyone brought tons of food and drinks and it was super festive.

Getting to know the neighbors
The BBQ started at 3pm and I ran out of conversations by 5pm and snuck home but James and Brian stayed out partying with the neighbors until after 1am! Once I heard Maxi Priest blaring out all over the back yard shortly after midnight I realized they’d moved the party to the neighbor’s house and I put in my earplugs. It’s funny, people always think I’m the more extroverted, outgoing person between James and me but it’s not really true. James is way more social and has far more endurance than I do. He and Brian are the true party animals in our family.
James and Brian recovering from their big night with the neighbors. Happy Father’s Day, James. I’m glad you are getting to relax. XOXO
