Barcelona

James Wilson had a week off from school so he and I flew to Barcelona for a few days. We wish James could have come, but he had to work and hold down the fort at home. We missed him, but it was good to have the time alone with my kid.

I’ve been struck recently by how fast time is moving. We’ve been in Amsterdam for almost 10 months and James Wilson is finishing 7th grade (Year 8 in the British School system) and it’s crazy to think we only have 5 years left of him living at home before he goes to college. I look at his teenage face and still see a willful, sweet four year old in there. One of the many things I love about his age now is how much fun it is to travel with him.

Travel is such a bonding experience for us. We planned a great itinerary for the 4 days we were in Barcelona. James Wilson did all the navigating in the city which was so awesome. He studied Gaudi in school, so he was excited to see some of the sites he’d learned about it person, and of course we both love food, and Barcelona has all the good stuff.

JW navigating us through Park Guell, which was his favorite of the Gaudi sites
Park Guell
I fell in love with Casa Batllo
We did audio tours of all the places we visited. The one in Casa Batllo was especially good. Can you imagine what it must have been like so see Gaudi’s work in Barcelona in real time at the turn of the century?
Bread and chocolate
We loved the food market at La Rambla
We ate lots of paella
Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter
Winding through the old streets in the Gothic Quarter
Dinner in the Gothic Quarter
Much ice cream
La Sagrada Familia
We bought a deck of cards and hung out in plazas and cafes playing gin rummy
We didn’t make it to the beach, but we did hang out at the harbor for a while

We had such a fun trip! It was the perfect amount of time — we were able to see everything we wanted to see, and we had plenty of down time in between sites to hang out and relax at the hotel’s roof deck pool or playing cards or sitting in the square eating ice cream. By the last day we were ready to get home and missing James and the pets.

Back home! The Shrimp Whisker is looking so good. We spent the weekend out on the canals. Life is good!

James Wilson goes to London next week for a school trip. He’s a lucky kid!

  • Your trip looked amazing! Maybe especially the bread and chocolate?

I always have a deck of cards in my bag, too 😉
