The Shrimp Whisker’s Maiden Voyage

The Shrimp Whisker is ready! We went out to the warehouse on Saturday to pick her up. We had to take an Uber there so that we could pilot the boat back on the water.

We spent about two hours at the warehouse while Martin and his crew got us ready to sail
Moving her to the water
It was so exciting!
Lots of last minute details before we could board
Reviewing the motor and getting all the ropes in place
Nearly ready
Here we go!
Heading out of the warehouse harbor on our maiden voyage towards home. James did so well navigating.
We went out on the big water, then to the Amstel, then to the smaller canal ring, right to our own canal.
Passing the brewery windmill
Lots of traffic inside the canal ring
It’s so much fun. I’m not ready to drive it yet, but I’ll get there.
Once we got to our canal we picked up Brian so he could go for a ride while we looked for a parking spot. I was worried it would be hard to get him on and off the boat but it was easy.
Parking on the canals is first come first served and you aren’t supposed to block off or reserve your spot but everyone does. People build little makeshift docks and hang tires as bumpers and put up little plaques with their boat’s name and length to save their spots. We were so lucky to find an open spot with available rigging to park on the canal closest to our street. James said I willed it to happen and I think he’s right. It’s a great location about a 3 minute bike ride from our house. It’s a little bit of a challenge to get in and out of the boat — you have to climb the canal wall, but there’s a spot down the street where there’s public access steps and a little dock so we can use that area to load and unload if we need to.
We ventured out again on Sunday. We noticed a couple of little things that need attention. There’s a small area where water is coming in on one side, and the boards need to be stained a darker color to protect it from the elements. Martin sent one of his crew members out to collect the Shrimp Whisker tonight and they are going to make a few adjustments and have her back to us in a couple of days.
