She’s Gone… I’d Pay the Devil to Replace Her
December 1, 2018
That’s a Hall and Oates song in case you are confused. I’m referring to Dorothy, of course. She left today, and is currently on a plane headed back to Virginia. I won’t lie, I’m feeling pretty blue to see her go. While she was visiting I campaigned pretty hard to get her to move here. It’s not totally far fetched — she moved to NYC the year after I did, and though it would be a challenge to figure out the logistics (visa, job and all that jazz) it’s not impossible. I’m not giving up so let’s just see how it all pans out, shall we?
In any event, we had such a great time while she was here. James suggested we do something special for her last night, so he booked a boat for the Festival of Lights. He even got us VIP tickets so we got the best spot on the boat (and far better drinks and food than everyone else on the boat, thank you very much).
It was amazing. Being on the canals is truly one of my favorite things about living in Amsterdam and this festival was such a cool experience. I mistakenly thought it was a Christmas thing, but turns out it had nothing to do with Christmas. It’s an annual art festival on the canal, and this year’s exhibits featured a light installation forming a giant brain, a bridge of spiders, and more weird, interesting, and — at times– beautiful stuff.
The night was so beautiful and was nearly perfect. Things went awry later when we got home and lit the second fire of the season in our fireplace and for some reason the chimney backed up and smoke started pouring into the room. The entire house quickly filled with smoke and James had to throw water on the fire and we had to lock the cat in the bedroom and open all the doors and windows to air the place out. It will probably be a week or so until the smoke entirely clears, and we have a call in to the landlord to service the chimney, but on the bright side, we sent Dorothy off on a memorable note!
Come back soon, my friend!!
