A Day at the Beach
August 26, 2018
Today we went to The Hague to spend the day at the beach. Again, James did all the research and motivated us to get our butts in gear and get out rather than just lazing around all Sunday. The day got off to a bit of a rough start as James Wilson was feeling especially homesick and emotional, but we did so many fun things, and The Hague is an awesome town, and we ended up having a really special day.
Against my better judgment, I said I’d be okay with them doing the zip line. I think it took a year off my life, but at least they had fun.
The beach has a long boardwalk full of restaurants, beach clubs, a flea market and a grand old historical hotel, We chose a place with a great view and ate a bunch of seafood with heads and beady eyes. (This was when James Wilson got sad, and we suspect the shrimp put him over the edge. I wasn’t thrilled with them either, to be honest.) James and JW did the zip line right after this which seemed to cheer the dude up.
We had planned to spend the day swimming, but it was pretty cold and windy and though we debated renting some chairs from one of the beach clubs, we took a tour of the grand hotel and discovered that you can buy a day pass to the spa, which overlooked the beach. We did that instead and spent a few hours swimming in the spa pool, using the sauna, and relaxing with a great view of the ocean. A bit fancy, yes, but it was the same price as renting beach chairs and it was a lot warmer. And to be honest, it was nice to have a little luxury. (There was a couple next to us who were a exhibiting a little too much PDA than was comfortable for us and I looked over at James and said “He may pork her, Russ” and he said he was thinking the same thing. )
We spent a bit more time walking the pier and ended the day with dinner at another restaurant on the pier before heading home feeling tired but happy.
Keep notes. We need good food when next we visit you. PS. Shrimps are good. Dad
Those shrimps remind me of the shrimps we got from a good truck in Hawaii! Gives new meaning to “fresh off the boat”!! I actually found them to be delicious! 🦐
They were tasty. I actually had more of a problem with the little ones that looked like grubs. I couldn’t bring myself to eat those guys.
It was good to “experience” this day with you guys!
Don’t order shrimp again, or do they call them “shrimps” like the Greeks do?
Beth! Lol, Dorothy and I both call them “shrimps” because one time years ago in Charlottesville I was eavesdropping on a girl I worked with who was planning a party on the phone with her mom and she kept saying she thought they should get “the shrimps” because people “like shrimps” and I’ve been saying shrimps ever since (and Dorothy has too, just like she says “thanks god” with me in solidarity because my old French art director at Elle used to say it).
This entire experience – the blog! the photos! – and now the replies has just made my day. Jen, this is fantastic. I’m so glad you’re doing this, and I’ll be checking in regularly.
So excited for you guys!
Aw, thanks Theresa! xo
Would have been with JW when lunch arrived and longed for any other beach restaurant I had ever met. Zip line after that might have been one step too far on the stomach.
